A Brief Note

There was a general perception among the public and the leading educationists and Hoteliers that, well qualified person were not being attracted towards teaching profession. Concerns were also expressed about the criteria that were employed for the selection of teachers. It was increasingly realized that quite a large number of people who neither had the competence nor the aptitude for teaching made an easy entry into this profession. The National Policy on Education, 1986, which was debated in the Parliament also, states that: “The method of recruitment of teachers will be reorganized to ensure merit, objectivity and conformity with spatial and functional requirements”. To overcome to the situation and to maintain the quality in hospitality education the scheme of National Hospitality Teachers eligibility Test (NHTET) has been drawn up.

Overview of the NHTET Scheme:

2.1

The scheme is to filter the best among the better to declare them eligible for Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates in NCHMCT affiliated IHMs and will be known as NHTET Scheme.

2.2

The scheme will be applicable to the citizen of India who fulfils the other eligibility criteria prescribed under this scheme.

2.3

The candidate declared eligible for Assistant Lecturer will have the only right to apply against any vacancy, if announced by NCHMCT affiliated IHMs, either of Government sector, PSU owned or Private sector. The NHTET qualified candidate will not have any right of automatic induction in NCHMCT affiliated IHMs. They have to face a separate selection process for induction as Assistant lecturer or Teaching Associates.

2.4

No NCHMCT affiliated IHMs shall recruit any Teaching Associate or Assistant Lecturer under direct recruitment against any regular vacancy if the candidate does not have a valid NHTET pass certificate.

Eligibility to sit in NHTET

1. Full time Bachelor’s Degree (not on ODL mode) in Hospitality Administration/ Hotel Management/ Culinary Art after 10+2 from a recognized University/ Institute with at least 55% marks and at least 2 years Hospitality Industry Experience after obtaining Degree (6 months IT is part of Courses, not to be considered as experience for this purpose).
OR
Full time Master’s Degree in Hospitality Administration/ Hotel Management/ Culinary Art with at least 55% marks from a recognized University/ Institute after full time Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma (not on ODL mode) for minimum of 3 years duration after 12^th from a recognised Board(the diploma for which pre-requisite minimum qualification fixed by the Regulator viz NCHMCT/AICTE/SBTE/Recognised University, is 12^th pass only and not 10^th) in Hospitality Administration/ Hotel Management/ Culinary Art from a recognized University/ Institute with at least 55% marks.Candidates having full time Bachelor Degree (not on ODL mode) in Hospitality/ Hotel Administration/ Management/ Culinary Art with 55% or more marks in aggregate and thereafter appeared in the final semester (i.e. in 4^th Semester)/ final year exam of the master’s degree for which the result will be declared within 2 months from the date of NHTET exam and have passed all subjects of previous year/ semesters, can also apply. It may be noted that the candidates who are in 2^nd year (3^rd Semester) of their Master’s Degree in Hospitality or even appeared in final semester but there is any paper back in earlier semester, are not eligible to apply.

Age should not be more than 35 years. Relaxation of age by 5 years for those belong to SC/ST/PD categories, 3 years for those belong to OBC categories is applicable as per rules. The maximum age in NHTET to be held from January to May, will be reckoned as on 31^st July of the same year. Similarly maximum age in NHTET to be held from July to October, will be reckoned as on 31^st December of the same year in following manner :

(TA – Teaching Associates. AL – Assistant Lecturer)

General and EWS Categories - TA 30 years, AL 35 years.
OBC Category- TA 33 years, AL 38 Years.
SC/ST and PD Categories- TA 35 years, AL 40 years.

Therefore, the candidates belong to General category and EWS category as well as fulfilling the age criteria of 35 years as on cut-off date, belong to OBC category as well as fulfilling the age criteria of 38 years and belong to SC/ ST/ PD category as well as fulfilling the age criteria of 40 years, will be eligible to apply.

On passing the NHTET, they will be allowed to apply against any vacancy of AL (of which, maximum age is 35 years with relaxation for reserved candidates as stated above) and for the post of TA (of which, maximum age is 30 years with relaxation for reserved candidates as stated above).

SCHEME AND DAYS OF TEST

4.1

The Test will consist of three papers. All the three papers will consist of only objective type questions and will be held once in a calendar year. However, in case of insufficient candidates are qualified, the NCHMCT can hold the exam twice in a calendar year. The test will be held on a single day in two separate sessions as under.

Paper-Ishall be of general nature, intended to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test aptitude and method towards teaching, reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness/ knowledge of the candidate. Fifty (50) multiple choice questions of two marks each will be given, out of which the candidate would be required to answer all fifty (50). In the event of the candidate attempting twice/ thrice, it will be counted as negative mark. However, there will be no negative mark for the question not attempted.Paper-II shall consist of 50 multiple choice questions of Nutrition, Food science, General Management, hotel accounts and Food Costing. Each question will carry two marks. Paper-III shall consist of 100 multiple choice questions.Paper III will be of two types, one for “Generic” and another for “F & B Specialisation”. a. For the Candidates having requisite qualification as per 3. 1 & 2 above in Hotel/ Hospitality Management/ Administration (without any specialisation): The Generic paper will consist of 100 MCQs from the four core areas of hospitality i.e. Food Production, F & B Service and Management, Accommodation Operation Management and House Keeping Management (25 questions from each area). Each question will carry two marks. b.Similarly, For the Candidates having requisite qualification as per 3. 1 & 2 above in Culinary Art/ Science specialisation: The F & B Specialisation paper will consist of 100 MCQs from the two core areas of F & B Specialisation i.e. Food Production and F & B Service (60 questions and 40 questions respectively). Each question will carry two marks. Candidate has to choose any one of the two papers (Paper III) above {either (a) or (b)} according to their qualification. It may be noted that, the candidates will be allowed to appear in practical skill test only in that option he/she has taken for theory, according to his/her qualification. For example, if a candidate has opted for Paper (a) i.e. Generic in Theory, then he/she cannot take practical for option (b).

4.2

The candidate will have to mark the responses for questions of Paper-I, Paper-II and Paper-III on the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) sheet provided along with the Test Booklet. It may be noted that, single Question paper booklet and single OMR sheet will be used for Paper-I and Paper-II. The detailed instructions for filling up the OMR Sheet will be mentioned in the call letter/ hall ticket. In case, the test is conducted in CBT (Computer Based Test) mode, the responses to be given on the Computer at the allotted exam centre only. There will not be any on-line test.

4.3

Those Persons with Disability (Physically Challenged) candidates who are not in a position to write in their own hand-writing can also avail the services of writer by making prior request (at least one week before the date of NHTET) in writing to the Co-ordinator of the NHTET Coordinating Institution. Compensatory time and facility of scribe would not be provided to other Persons with Disability (Physically Challenged) candidates.

4.5

After the NHTET exam is over, the answer key will be uploaded inwww.thims.gov.in when the candidate can go through it and challenge the answer with documentary proof within 4 days’ time by mail todiraf-nchm@nic.in only. No correspondence of challenge the answer after the last date will be accepted. In case, any candidate challenges any answer, the same will be forwarded to the expert committee for decision and the decision along with final Answer Key will be uploaded inwww.thims.gov.in by another 5 working days. Answer sheets will be evaluated on the basis of new Answer Key by another 4 working days. Result will then be declared through the web portal of NCHMCT ( www.thims.gov.in ). The Certificates of passing NHTET will be dispatched to the candidates accordingly in a shortest possible time. However, till the candidate are not getting the original certificate, the downloaded result from the above mentioned site will be valid.

4.6

Candidate can appear as many as times he/ she can during his/ her permissible period i.e. up to 35 years of age on the specified date of the notification. However, an OBC (non-creamy layer) may apply up to 38 years of age and SC/ST/PD may apply up to 40 years of age.

PROCEDURE & CRITERIA FOR DECLARATION OF RESULT:

NHTET will comprise of following steps:
Step I: Minimum marks to be obtained in NHTET for considering a candidate eligibility for Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates in NCHM and its any affiliated IHM: The candidates are required to obtain following minimum marks separately in Paper-I, Paper-II, Paper-III and Aggregate of three Papers, to become eligible for both i.e. Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates, are as given below:

The candidates are required to obtain following minimum marks separately in Paper-I, Paper-II, Paper-III and Aggregate of three Papers, to become eligible only for Teaching Associate, are as given below:

Therefore, the candidate declared pass for applying against Teaching Associateship will not be eligible to apply against any vacancy of Assistant Lecturer. Such candidate has to take further chance in subsequent NHTET to pass with the required percentage prescribed for becoming eligible to the post of Assistant Lecturer.

Step II: Amongst those candidates who have cleared step I, a detailed mark sheet-cum-certificate will be prepared and send to such candidates. The said certificate will remain valid for the period mentioned on it, to apply for a post of Assistant Lecturer/ Teaching Associates in NCHM or any of its affiliated IHMs.

Step III: Those candidates who have not cleared step I, a detailed tabulation sheet containing marks will be prepared with a remark ‘not cleared’ and will be displayed in the web portal www.thims.gov.in.

It may be noted that the above qualifying criteria decided by NCHMCT is final and binding. However, the NCHMCT has the power to change the qualifying criteria if feel necessary and notify along with reason for change before declaring the result.

Validity of the NHTET certificate

6.1

(a) The Certificate will have valid up to the period, the Candidate will remain in the maximum age prescribed to apply against any vacancy of Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates at NCHMCT and its affiliated IHMs.

The eligibility criteria and validity period may change in future, but the interest of the already qualified candidates will be taken care of.

6.2

At any later on stage during the validity period of the NHTET certificate, if found that the candidate furnished incorrect information and forged document to prove his/her eligibility, his/ her certificate of NHTET will be cancelled immediately and a common circular to that effect will immediately be issued to all the IHMs. His/ Her candidature will also be debarred for next two chance to sit in NHTET.

How to Apply

7.1

Candidate should go through the details of the Brochure and see the requirement to fill the application form on-line in the portal www.thims.gov.in.

7.2

Candidate have to purchase a demand draft from any scheduled Bank for the requisite amount of application fee before filling up the form, since the DD number will be required to fill in the form. In case of filling wrong DD number, the DD sent by the candidate along with print out, cannot be matched by the system and such form will liable to be rejected.

7.3

Scan copy of passport size photograph in the required resolution and required pixel should be maintained to upload that in the application.

7.4

Scan copy of one of the valid ID card in the required resolution and required pixel will also be required to upload in the application. ID card can be Adhar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, Driving Licence and Passport.

5.5

All the information to be filled should be correct and spelling also be correct.

5.6

Mobile number and the e-mail id should be valid, since all information will come through those communication mode. No surface male will be sent to any candidate.

5.7

Candidates not having Post Graduation Degree in Hospitality, need to fill the details of experience at least of two years in the Hospitality Industry (established Hotel, registered with Govt. or classified or other Hospitality Industry) after obtaining the Degree in Hospitality. The information should be correct and factual and having documentary proof. Industrial Training done to complete the degree, will not be counted as experience. The same experience will be recorded in the NHTET certificate on the event of qualifying the exam. Therefore in case of false information about Experience during NHTET, and if a candidate fails to present the experience certificate from the same Hotel or Industry as mentioned in the NHTET Certificate, during their selection in any IHM, it will be treated under falsification of the Information and the NHTET Certificate will be cancelled at once with debarment of two chance from applying for NHTET.

ON- LINE APPLICATION FEE : Rs.800/- for General/ EWS /OBC categories(male candidates only)
And Rs.400/- for all female candidates as well as SC/ST/PD categories (fee can be revised in future NHTET) To be submitted along with the print out of the confirmation copy of the duly filled in and on line submitted application form.

After online submission of the form, the candidate will be able to get print out of his/ her filled in application form containing three pages.The same should be sent to the Council along with Demand Draft for the amount prescribed as application fee latest by the stipulated date prescribed for the same positively. No other document need to attach. Candidate must send the confirmation sheet along with Demand Draft to NCHMCT by recorded post only (Speed Post or Registered Post).

Admit Card

10.1

Candidates has to download the Admit Card from the same portal between the specific time periods allotted for this purpose.

10.2

No printed Admit card will be sent by surface male to any candidate.

10.3

No candidate will be allowed to enter in to the exam hall without a print out of Admit Card and the original id card uploaded in the application form.

10.4

Impersonation is a cognizable offence and Exam Superintendent is authorised to hand over nay impersonator to police.

Declaration of Result and NHTET qualified Certificate

Consolidated list of qualified candidates and unqualified candidates will be published in the portalwww.thims.gov.in on or before the stipulated date fixed for declaring it.
If any candidate wants to see his/ her answer sheet for satisfaction, has to come to NCHMCT office at Noida within a period of 90 days from the date of declaration of the result. He/ She may also ask the copy of Answer Sheets under RTI by depositing the requisite fee within the said 90 days only. After that date, all the records will be disposed of.

Prescribed Process of final selection against the vacancy of Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates in NCHMCT affiliated IHMs, after NHTET or Ph.D. in Hospitality topic.

Govt. of India has stopped Interview in the selection against Group B and C posts. As such, the selection of Teaching Associates and Assistant Lecturer should be in the following manner.
Minimum requirement of both the posts are either NHTET qualified or having Ph.D on a Hospitality Topic. There will be an weightage of NHTET score for them who are qualified the exam. But those having Ph.D in hospitality will have different calculation. The details are as under.
The final selection will be made at the Institute Level through Skill tests for both i.e. NHTET qualified and Ph.D. degree holders. Skill will be of 50 marks and weightage for NHTET or Ph.D. up to 50 marks.
Practical Skill test (to be taken for all the four core area of Hospitality. Each practical is for 7 to 8 marks and the total marks for Practical skill is 30)
Candidates has to score pass marks separately in Practical Skill and Teaching Skill. Therefore, merely on qualifying the NHTET with prescribed percentage or having Ph.D. degree will not confer any right to a candidate to be selected without obtaining pass marks in the Skill tests.

Pass marks prescribed in the skill test for all categories is as under:

Assessment of Skill Test will be done by the members of Selection Committee as prescribed in the Recruitment Rules. If the Selection Committee feels to adopt subject expert during Assessment, they may do so, with the approval of Chairman of the Selection Committee.
Assessment of the Skill tests should be done on the basis of prescribed parameters and the marks allotted in each parameter, as per para 13.11 and 13.12 bellow.
Institute should make separate assessment sheet for each of the candidate for Practical Skill and Teaching Skill test. Each Assessment sheet should be signed by the Assessor in the space provided in the prescribed Assessment form.
Weightage of NHTET score should be calculated in the prescribed form as at para 13 bellow and the weightage of Ph.D. should be calculated on the basis of score in the Skill test in the prescribed form as at Para 13.14 bellow.
Those who secured the prescribed pass marks in both Skill Tests, will be brought forwarded to the final tabulation sheet along with the weightage of NHTET and Ph.D. in the prescribed form as prescribed in para 13.15 bellow.
Assessment of Practical Skill (Assessor means the selection committee members and other subject experts, if co-opted by the selection committee with the approval of the Chairman)
Teaching Aptitude Test for 18 marks Classroom teaching (Assessment is more on the technique and not less on the topic)
Calculation of weightage of NHTET Score (for the candidates not having Ph.D in Hospitality Topic and became eligible on the basis NHTET conducted by NCHM.

Those became eligible on the basis of Ph.D in hospitality topic, will not have weightage of NHTET and in those case to make a combined merit list with the NHTET qualified, a weightage of 95% of their aggregate number obtained in Skill test will be added in the final score sheet.
