History of NCHMCT
The National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT) was established in 1982 by the Government of India under the Ministry of Tourism as an autonomous body with the mandate to structure, regulate, and promote hospitality education across the country. It was initially known as the National Board of Studies in Food Management, Catering & Nutrition, and was later renamed to reflect its expanded role and growing academic responsibilities.
Key Milestones in the History of NCHMCT:
- 1982: Established as an autonomous body to oversee and coordinate hospitality education in India.
- 1989: With the growing need for a standardized curriculum, NCHMCT developed a common syllabus for its affiliated institutes.
- 2000: The Council expanded its reach by affiliating SIHMs and FCIs under State Government.
- 2002: In collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), NCHMCT launched a 3-Year B.Sc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration to bring hospitality education under a recognized university system.
- 2006: The Council started affiliating Private Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) for running Graduate as well as short duration courses.
- 2020 onwards: NCHMCT continued modernizing curriculum and promoting digital learning and industry integration in hospitality education.
Role and Objectives of NCHMCT:
- Designing, regulating, and maintaining academic standards in hospitality and catering education.
- Conducting the NCHM JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) for admissions into IHMs across India.
- Promoting research, innovation, and professional excellence in the fields of hospitality, hotel management, and tourism.
- Coordinating with national and international institutions, as well as the industry, for internships, placements, skill development, and curriculum alignment with evolving market needs.
Current Status:
Today, NCHMCT oversees more than 70 Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs), including Central Government, State Government, PSU-run, and private institutes. As the apex body for hospitality education in India, the Council plays a pivotal role in developing skilled professionals for the hospitality, catering, and tourism sectors, contributing significantly to national and global workforce demand.
